Topic: The government should stop selling cigarettes
The advantage and disadvantage of selling cigarettes in Thailand has always been a hot issue nowadays. It is inescapable to ignore this issue because cigarettes or tobacco concerns both health reasons and important source of government revenue. A variety of different arguments has been put forward about this topic. This essay will consider the reasons that support selling cigarettes and point to some of the flaws with these opinions. I will then explain the reasons why Thai government should stop selling such the glow of murderous light.
Proponents of selling cigarettes claim that in aspect of economy, tax income from selling tobacco is an abundant wealth of cash of the country. In 2006, Thai government earned about 49,000 million baht from cigarettes’ tax, said Doctor Prakit Wateesatakit, the secretary of Action on Smoking and Health Foundation. However, this profit that the government earns will certainly become a disaster because the government will lose a large amount of money from medical treatment expense. Doctor Prakit also said “In 2006, it was clear that the government lost money from treating people who had diseases by smoking, such as lung cancer and heart attack about 54,000 million baht.” The loss is so much more than the gain. Therefore, tobacco is not simply a money-making product. It is a dangerous substance that must be banned. The government must consider people’s health to be first priority, rather than money.
Proponents of selling cigarettes also argue that smoking is an easy way to release people’s stress. Most smokers believe that when facing stress, a cigarette can release’s their tension within a few second. Nevertheless, they don’t actually release their tension when smoking by all means. It is just the effect of Nicotine- the substance that makes people become relaxed and addicted. Moreover, according to the website of Action on Smoking and Health Foundation, in cigarettes’ smoke, it consists of more than 5,000 hazardous substances destroying nervous system, respiratory system and blood vessels. Nowadays, despite smoking, there are hundreds of ways to reduce tension, without having risks of diseases. Yoga, in particular, is one of the most effective techniques for combating stress. It develops both physical and mental health.
Supporters of selling cigarettes assert that smokers don’t bother non-smokers around because there is an area for smoking. They also said that there is no law forcing them to quit smoking. Nonetheless, it is not about the law. It is about the common sense and conscious, realizing that although there is an area, the cigarettes smoke will go to the air and risk non-smokers’ life. We have a right to breathe fresh air, especially children, but those smokers are so selfish that they do not understand the unfair effect on the innocent. The study of Action on Smoking and Health Foundation showed that one will have two times risk of lung cancer if he lives in the neighborhood of cigarettes smoke whether smoking or not. Tragically, there are a large number of passive smokers or innocent victims who die from breathing cigarettes’ smoke.
All things considered, I disagree with the idea of selling cigarettes. In reality, we are now at the crossroads about the direction and development of a tobacco industry. It is because the government has the contradictory policies of allowing cigarettes on sale and discouraging smoking at the same time. It is a law issue that needs to be fixed as soon as possible. If we leave this problem unchecked, our living standard and our health would deteriorate, so would our economy.

Topic: The Government Should Stop Selling Cigarettes
The argument between the advantages and disadvantages of selling cigarettes in Thailand has always been a hot issue. It is inescapable to ignore this as the consumption of cigarettes or tobaccos entails health concerns. Yet, this acts as an important source of government’s revenue at the same time. Varieties of different arguments have been put forward and this essay will consider the reasons that support sale of cigarettes and point out some of the flaws with those opinions. The paper will then explain the reasons why Thai government should stop selling such glow of murderous light.
The proponents of cigarette sale claim that, in terms of benefits toward the economy, tax collected from tobacco sale is an abundant source of wealth for the country. In 2006, Thai government received about 49 billion baht from cigarette tax, as claimed by Doctor Prakit Wateesatakit, the secretary of Action on Smoking and Health Foundation. However, this revenue will certainly deem disastrous as the government would be expected to spend a large amount of money on cigarette-related health problems. Doctor Prakit also mentioned that the government had lost money from treating people who were down with diseases due to smoking, such as lung cancer and heart attack. The expense amounted to about 54 billion baht in 2006. It is clear that the loss is so much more than the gain. Therefore, we should not see tobacco as simply a money-making product. It is indeed a dangerous substance that should be banned. Instead of giving more weights to the tax revenue earnings, the government should consider people’s health as the first priority.
In addition, the proponents of selling cigarettes also argue that smoking is an easy way to release stress. Most smokers believe that smoking cigarettes could release tension quickly. Nevertheless, this is not, in reality, a healthy way to release tension. It is simply the effects of Nicotine: a harmful and addictive substance in cigarettes that gives the sense of tranquility. Besides, the Action on Smoking and Health Foundation’s website states that cigarette smoke consists of over 5,000 hazardous substances which destroy nervous system, respiratory system and blood vessels. In my opinion, smoking is just an excuse to release one from stress. Nowadays, there are hundreds of ways to reduce tension without getting oneself near any health risks or diseases. Yoga, in particular, is one of the most effective techniques to combat stress. It helps develop both physical and mental health well-being.
The supporters of cigarette sale also assert that smokers do not affect non-smokers in public as there are now separate areas designated for smoking. They also point out that smoking, by itself, is not against the law. Even so, it is not so about the law but regards individual’s common sense and conscience. Despite the specific smoking areas, cigarette smoke could somehow get into the air and thus be contacted by anyone. The risks to non-smokers’ life is also at stake. I believe in human rights and everyone has the right to breathe fresh air, especially so for children. Uncaring smokers would be selfish if they do not understand or ignore the adverse effects of cigarette smoke on the innocents. Moreover, a study by the Action on Smoking and Health Foundation shows that one will be two times at risk of lung cancer if lived in the neighborhood prone of cigarette smoke, regardless whether he himself smokes or not. Tragically, there are large numbers of passive smokers or innocent victims who would be at high risk of dying from breathing in other’s cigarette smoke.
All things considered, I disagree with the idea of cigarette sale. In the real world, we face tough decisions as the government permits cigarette sale and yet implements rules to discourage smoking in public. Such contradictory policies would call for new legislations to fix the situation as soon as possible. If we leave this problem unchecked, our health and living standards would deteriorate. Inevitably, this will so affect our economy unfavorably.

How to Get Answers to 5 Key Questions Before Taking a Job

Source: http://hotjobs.yahoo.com/interview/Is_It_a_Fit__20060908-121225.html?subtopic=Interview+Preparation
Three times during his career, Leslie G. Griffen has asked a prospective employer whether he can walk around the company and talk with employees about how they like their jobs. Twice the employers gave him the go-ahead, which told Griffen they were confident their employees were happy. One employer balked - a sign that this was not a good match.
"Most companies will talk the talk. They'll talk about how important employees are," says Griffen, who is now principal of The Griffen Group, which provides human resources and career coaching and consulting services, in Lee's Summit, Mo. How an employer responds to this request is almost as telling as the answers employees give. "If they pull back in their chair and say, 'You want what?' it's probably an indication that they might not be being straight up with you."
When you're considering taking a new job, it's important to find out how a potential employer treats employees. But getting the answer to that question, along with others that will help you determine if you'll be happy at the company, may take some sleuthing. Here are five questions that will help you decide if the company is a fit - and some unconventional ways to find the answers:
1. What makes employees join this company and stay here? You can always ask your potential manager this question in an interview. But if you ask the employees you see while walking around the premises, as Griffen did, you'll get a wider variety of answers - and possibly more honest ones.
2. How are people treated here? You may not even need to ask anyone this - just observe carefully from the time you set foot in the building. When you arrive for your interview, are you kept waiting with no explanation? Does the interviewer interrupt your conversation to take phone calls? "Try to come at different times if you have multiple interviews," advises Gail Ginder, a leadership coach with the Claros Group in Healdsburg, Calif. That way you'll see if the mood around the building changes with the time of day.
3. What are the unspoken rules? For this and other questions that are best asked of employees, you have two options. One is to use your network to find employees who work at the company but aren't involved in hiring you. The other is to ask your interviewer - but only when it's clear that the interviewer has decided you're the best candidate and is trying to get you to sign on. "When they've decided you're the one, you can ask pretty much anything as long as you ask it well," Ginder says.
4. What happens when people make mistakes? The answer to this will give you insight into the company's management and culture. You can ask it of an interviewer late in the interview process, or ask employees who aren't involved in hiring. The key is to pose the question without sounding like someone who is planning to make a lot of mistakes. Use humor, Ginder advises. "Say, 'If I were lucky enough to be offered this job, I would never want to make a mistake. But what happens here when people make a mistake?'"
5.What is a typical week like? The answer to this question can give insight into everything from how long the workdays are to how many after-hours phone calls you can expect. Vic Snyder, senior career counselor at the University of Washington's Center for Career Services in Seattle, suggests that in informal conversations with employees, you pair this question with one about how often employees take their full vacations.
No iPhones, iPods at Bill Gates's house

Bill Gates's sprawling Washington state compound is, as you might expect, packed to the gills with bleeding-edge gear, from the heated floors and 20-seat home theater to the X-ray machine (for screening the mail, of course) and miles of fiber-optic cabling. But here's what you definitely won't find at chez Gates: an iPhone. In the latest issue of Vogue, Bill's wife, Melinda Gates, reveals that among the "very few things" on "the banned list in our household" are—you guessed it—iPods and iPhones.
Brutal, yes—especially for Bill and Melinda's three kids (two daughters and a son, aged 12, six, and nine, respectively), who'll just have to grin and bear it as their little pals make merry with the latest and greatest iPod.
And even Melinda herself admits to an occasional pang of Apple envy: "Every now and then I look at my friends and say, 'Ooh, I wouldn't mind having that iPhone.'" (Ouch!)
Then again, what else did we expect from Microsoft founder Bill Gates? The man has his pride, not to mention scores of Windows Mobile and Zune team members who'd probably feel a tad bit hurt if Bill Jr. was running around with an iPhone.
So, which phones and MP3 players are on the Gates's "good-to-go" list? Well, there's always the Zune for music and video—not the sexiest MP3 player out there, mind you, but at least it's got Wi-Fi and a snazzy interface.
And of course, there are plenty of Windows Mobile handsets to choose from; personally, I'd go for the Palm Treo Pro (if I had to get a Windows Mobile phone, that is), although it's not exactly a barrel of fun for the teens. Or how about the HTC Touch Pro? That's a pretty cool phone … I guess (as I pat the iPhone 3G in my jeans pocket).

Application of Self Sufficiency Philosophy
The US subprime crisis is an ongoing economic problem that becomes more apparent during 2007 and 2008, and it is effecting on many financial institutions all over the world, including Thailand. However, it still has many solutions. One is the self sufficiency philosophy. The self sufficiency philosophy is a philosophy that stresses the middle path as an overriding principle for appropriate conduct by the populace at all levels. The self sufficiency philosophy can applied to individual and household, business, and economic policy to solve the economic crisis in Thailand.
The first and important solution for the economic crisis is the individual and household application of the self sufficiency philosophy. You have to decide reasonably in investment and consumption. For example, you have to do financial planning e.g. save money in the bank or think before buying something, do not borrow for no good reasons, and limit your unnecessary luxurious consumption. It will help you not to be in debt.
The second is the business application of the self sufficiency philosophy. If you have the business, you have to manage the risk in your business. Investment in any businesses have a risk, so the investor should study be fore invest, it will decrease the unnecessary risk. Moreover, you have to be responsible to the society. From one concept of the self sufficiency philosophy---One must stop selfish competition and the habit of taking advantage of others---following the Royal speech:
"...The meaning of genuine happiness derived from one's fair conduct, both of intention and action, and not from coincidence or taking advantage of others..."
The third is the economic policy application of the self sufficiency philosophy. The government has to be fair in distribution by strengthening impoverished rural communities. Focus on grassroot economy by adjusts the balance of economic development framework, emphasis on public well-being.
In conclusion, these self sufficiency philosophy applications: individual and household application, business application, and economic application are the solutions to solve the economic crisis in Thailand. The application of the philosophy is not limited to the national level. The philosophy is applicable to people from all walk of life and at all levels.

Application of Self-Sufficiency Philosophy to Thai Economy
The US subprime crisis is a tacit yet ongoing economic problem that became more apparent during 2007 and 2008. It has affected many financial institutions all over the world, including Thailand. However, in my opinion, it could have been prevented or lessened by practicing self-sufficiency philosophy. Self-sufficiency philosophy stresses the maintaining of the middle path. It is an overriding principle for appropriate conducts. This philosophy could be applied to the following 3 sectors: individuals and households, businesses, and economic policies to recoup Thai economy.
As individuals, households could uphold self-sufficiency philosophy in practice as a solution in times of current economic crisis. This could be manifested through the way we reasonably and sensibly invest and consume. For example, besides prudent financial planning such as saving money in the banks or thinking conscientiously before buying something, we should not borrow without good reasons. In this way, we could limit ourselves from unnecessary luxurious consumption. It is a good way of avoiding debts.
Secondly, the application of the self-sufficiency philosophy is also relevant to business settings. To manage related risks in businesses, investor should carefully examine investment options to reduce unnecessary threats. Despite tough competition, businesses have to be responsible to the society. This is inline with one concept of the self-sufficiency philosophy which states that ‘one must stop selfish competition and the habit of taking advantage of others’. Likewise, it follows one of His Majesty the King’s speeches:
"...The meaning of genuine happiness derived from one's fair conduct, both of intention and action, and not from coincidence or taking advantage of others..."
Lastly, to apply self-sufficiency philosophy in the implementations of sound economic policies, the government must be precautious. It should be compassionate in wealth distribution, especially aimed at strengthening the impoverished rural communities. The government could focus on the grassroots groups and give more weights to economic and public welfare development.
In conclusion, self-sufficiency philosophy concept could be suitably applied to the individuals and households, businesses and economic policies to lessen the impact of economic crisis in Thailand. The relevance of this philosophy is not limited to the national level, but is applicable to people from all walks of life and at all levels.

Application Self Sufficiency in Thai Society
Today economic crisis has happened in countries around the world and also has happened in Thailand. Everyone is concerned about economic crisis. The self sufficiency economy is the simple way to solve this problem. It is applicable to everyone. The self sufficiency economy means having enough to live on. If everyone has enough to live on, everything will be all right.
One main way of application self sufficiency in Thai society is having moderation. Moderation is both inside mind and in conduct. Inside mind, we should stop greed, and satisfied with oneself need and things that one have. We should proud of oneself for being able to stand on oneself own. In conduct, we should refrain from a luxurious and extravagant life. We should not buy luxurious such as mobile phones, ornaments and expensive clothes. We should use things carefully.
Another way of application self sufficiency in Thai society is having knowledge and virtue. Knowledge has to base on moral. If there is not moral, people can use knowledge in the wrong way. About having knowledge, we can take benefit from nature to using. But we have to use enough. We should live with reason. Using reason consider every problems that have effect with us. We should think carefully for solve every problems. We should know way to spend money for we will can smart in spending money. We should help person who has trouble.
The last way of application self sufficiency in Thai society is having preparation. We should plan anything before have problem. We should understand one. We should save money for spend in exigent time. We should know about present situation. We should always search new knowledge.
In conclusion, ways to application self sufficiency in Thai society are understand in moderation, having knowledge with moral and having planning for future. The self sufficiency economy seems easy to understand, but some people may not fully understand it. If we are satisfied with living in sufficiency, we can pass economic crisis comfortably. The Application Self Sufficiency in Thai Society
Up to date, economic crisis has been widely observed in many countries around the world and Thailand is no exception. Nearly everyone is concerned about this predicament. In my opinion, self-sufficiency economy is a simple way-out to solve this problem. It is reasonably applicable to any setting. In essence, self sufficiency economy entails having just enough resources to live on, and, with this, everything will be in fine balance. To live in sufficiency is to learn the true meaning of happiness in life.
The principle of self-sufficiency concept in Thai society is based on the attainment of moderation. Moderation is exercised both in thoughts (mind) and in actions (conduct). We should stop greedy thoughts, and be satisfied with ourselves and with what we have. Nonetheless, we must also, at the same time, be proud to stand on our own. By behavior, we should refrain from unnecessary luxurious and extravagant life. In other words, we should learn to live simple and utilize resources prudently.
I assert that we could attain self-sufficiency in Thai society through having constant awareness of wisdom and the sense of preparations. Wisdom is based on morality. Unless there is morality, people cannot use their knowledge in the right way. With the proper use of knowledge, we can reap benefits from things around us. At the same time, we should also live with reason: considering reasons to solve problems that we face. For instance, when we think carefully, we would know how to spend money wisely and appropriately. The core of this wisdom is being moral. Morality, in my understanding, consists of honesty, diligence, patience and generosity. We should behave morally, work and live honestly and diligently. By this, we should be less selfish and help others who are in trouble.
Lastly, the means of practicing self sufficiency in Thai society is also through having the sense of preparations. What I mean by this is that we should anticipate, plan ahead and foresee problems. For instance, if we want to save money for difficult times, we should discern the present situation and be all set for the coming future. In other words, it is practical that we are always in search for new knowledge and be ready for circumstances.
In conclusion, we can simply put the application self sufficiency in Thai society into the understanding of the term ‘moderation’. It is the notion of having the knowledge, being moral and having the sense of future preparations. The establishment of self-sufficiency economy seems easy to understand, but the concept may not be understood fully by all. Unless we are satisfied with living simply in sufficiency, we cannot pass by economic crisis with ease.

Comparing betIen The Golden Gate park and the Ja Tu Juk park
Some people like to take a walk for relaxation in park. They can go exercise, get good fresh air, and feel comfortable. Trees can make their eyes feel good. In my opinion, each city has different parks. The Ja Tu Juk park is one of the famous parks in Bangkok. Even though It is in downtown, and it does not have many big trees, it has big club sports. The Golden Gate park, a popular park in San Francisco, has numerous huge trees, many creature living and especially museums.
The Golden Gate park, located in living neighborhood in San Francisco, is very wonderful because it is plenty of natural. Many trees in park are verdant, huge and tall. Moreover, I am able to see apparently various little creatures running back and forth in the branches of trees. Walking around in park is very good ideas since I could get oxygen vigorous air which trees come out. Every time I see green from trees, my eyes feel relaxing. Not only do I feel my physical body alleviately, but our heart and brain are very calm and cool as well. It helps me release stress and find a difficult solution that I face. Likewise, there are fantastic enormous museums designed harmoniously with the park. It is very amazing to study animals, academic exhibition and plant lives among natural.
The Ja Tu Juk park is a fascinating park in Bangkok. As It is located in downtown section, some parts of the park is changed to shopping center. After I generally finish exercise, I manage to go shopping inside the park. I can find tasty food, interesting book and bright clothing easily and take a slow walk around stores. In addition, it is very safe due to the fact that there are many small trees and they are arranged with order. Despite not having big trees, it is the place where I could take a relaxation and get good air. It is marvelrous to walk in the park after I finish the busy work and face the situation in rush hours. Furthermore, there are many sports such as basketball, football, dancing and so on. If I feel tedious about walking or running around the park, I could change exercise by playing sports. Moreover, I could make new friends also. However, I cannot feel a variety of natural as it is supposed to be. The park in the center of business still has pollution such as loud noise from outside. It would be better if I let myself see the natural and stop seeing colorful stuffs for a while in the downtown park.
The Golden Gate park and the Ja Tu Juk park have different advantages. In Golden Gate Park, I can entertain seeing animals and enormous trees and get knowledge in museums. In spite of unsafe to walk among big trees in disorder, it gives the sense of the real park. I perhaps could see rare birds and hear the sound of their singing. Obviously, the Ja Tu Juk park never sleeps and the trees are in order. It is convenient, safe and easy to go. Besides, it is alternative to go exercise and shopping and even I can smell good air. Nevertheless, When I am in the park, it is very tedious to see human lives and I also cannot escape from nervousness in the center of business area. Furthermore, although there is no sport in the Golden Gate Park, it has amazing museums. I could get a lot of information from academic science. It is very interesting to study how plants grow and how animals live.

Some people like to take a stroll in a park for relaxation. There, they could exercise, get good fresh air and feel comfortable. The greenery and soft natural colors from trees and plants soothe the eyes.
The Golden Gate Park, a popular park in San Francisco, has abundant verdant, huge and tall trees as well as natural lively creature living in habitats. It is located in a neighborhood area. Walking around in the park is very refreshing. Not only that the greenery from trees relaxes the eyes, it unwinds anxiety from the body, heart and brain. It helps release stress. In addition, there are museums nicely designed and situated harmoniously within the park. It is a good place to study about animals and plants living in nature through academic exhibitions.
In contrast, the JJ Park, one of the most famous parks in Bangkok, is located in the downtown section. Some parts of the park have been converted to shopping center. This is what I like best about coming to JJ Park. Usually after I finish exercising at the park, I would go shopping there. What’s more, I could easily find tasty food and browse for interesting books and bright clothing. I also like to take a slow walk around stores. Noticeably, walking through the park is very enjoyable as trees are orderly planted and properly arranged. Though the place is not crowded with big trees, it is a good place where I could relax and get fresh air. It is indeed pleasant to walk in the JJ Park after a day of busy work, in the midst of the evening rush hours. At the park, there are many sports and recreational activities such as playing basketball, football and dancing. I often play sports there too for a change, instead of taking a walk or running round the park for exercise. With this, I have made new friends.
In comparison, the Golden Gate Park and the JJ Park have different points of attraction. At the Golden Gate Park, I enjoy seeing lively animals, enormous trees and learning at the museums. In spite of the rather unsafe walks among disorderly big trees grown in natural setting, the park gives a good overall feeling of a real unpretentious park. Visitors could see rare birds and hear them sing. Although there are no sports and recreational activities going on in the Golden Gate Park, the amazing museums offer an alternative choice to enjoy another side of nature. Visitors could obtain information on science and study how plants grow and how animals live. On the other hand, the JJ Park is located in the city area and trees are grown in an orderly manner. It is a convenient, safe and easy-to-go place for exercise and shopping, and even to get fresh air. Nevertheless, whenever the park becomes crowded, it gives a strong feeling of increasing human interference into the nature. In my opinion, parks are the places intended for people who want to escape from the busy city life. Despite the pleasing natural environment at the JJ Park, I, however, wish it could have less human intrusions to give it back natural life. As we all know, the JJ Park in located at the center of business district where air and noise pollution coming from the outside cannot be completely avoided. It would be a more pleasing visit if one could be totally immersed in nature while visiting the park.
