Topic: The government should stop selling cigarettes
The advantage and disadvantage of selling cigarettes in Thailand has always been a hot issue nowadays. It is inescapable to ignore this issue because cigarettes or tobacco concerns both health reasons and important source of government revenue. A variety of different arguments has been put forward about this topic. This essay will consider the reasons that support selling cigarettes and point to some of the flaws with these opinions. I will then explain the reasons why Thai government should stop selling such the glow of murderous light.
Proponents of selling cigarettes claim that in aspect of economy, tax income from selling tobacco is an abundant wealth of cash of the country. In 2006, Thai government earned about 49,000 million baht from cigarettes’ tax, said Doctor Prakit Wateesatakit, the secretary of Action on Smoking and Health Foundation. However, this profit that the government earns will certainly become a disaster because the government will lose a large amount of money from medical treatment expense. Doctor Prakit also said “In 2006, it was clear that the government lost money from treating people who had diseases by smoking, such as lung cancer and heart attack about 54,000 million baht.” The loss is so much more than the gain. Therefore, tobacco is not simply a money-making product. It is a dangerous substance that must be banned. The government must consider people’s health to be first priority, rather than money.
Proponents of selling cigarettes also argue that smoking is an easy way to release people’s stress. Most smokers believe that when facing stress, a cigarette can release’s their tension within a few second. Nevertheless, they don’t actually release their tension when smoking by all means. It is just the effect of Nicotine- the substance that makes people become relaxed and addicted. Moreover, according to the website of Action on Smoking and Health Foundation, in cigarettes’ smoke, it consists of more than 5,000 hazardous substances destroying nervous system, respiratory system and blood vessels. Nowadays, despite smoking, there are hundreds of ways to reduce tension, without having risks of diseases. Yoga, in particular, is one of the most effective techniques for combating stress. It develops both physical and mental health.
Supporters of selling cigarettes assert that smokers don’t bother non-smokers around because there is an area for smoking. They also said that there is no law forcing them to quit smoking. Nonetheless, it is not about the law. It is about the common sense and conscious, realizing that although there is an area, the cigarettes smoke will go to the air and risk non-smokers’ life. We have a right to breathe fresh air, especially children, but those smokers are so selfish that they do not understand the unfair effect on the innocent. The study of Action on Smoking and Health Foundation showed that one will have two times risk of lung cancer if he lives in the neighborhood of cigarettes smoke whether smoking or not. Tragically, there are a large number of passive smokers or innocent victims who die from breathing cigarettes’ smoke.
All things considered, I disagree with the idea of selling cigarettes. In reality, we are now at the crossroads about the direction and development of a tobacco industry. It is because the government has the contradictory policies of allowing cigarettes on sale and discouraging smoking at the same time. It is a law issue that needs to be fixed as soon as possible. If we leave this problem unchecked, our living standard and our health would deteriorate, so would our economy.

Topic: The Government Should Stop Selling Cigarettes
The argument between the advantages and disadvantages of selling cigarettes in Thailand has always been a hot issue. It is inescapable to ignore this as the consumption of cigarettes or tobaccos entails health concerns. Yet, this acts as an important source of government’s revenue at the same time. Varieties of different arguments have been put forward and this essay will consider the reasons that support sale of cigarettes and point out some of the flaws with those opinions. The paper will then explain the reasons why Thai government should stop selling such glow of murderous light.
The proponents of cigarette sale claim that, in terms of benefits toward the economy, tax collected from tobacco sale is an abundant source of wealth for the country. In 2006, Thai government received about 49 billion baht from cigarette tax, as claimed by Doctor Prakit Wateesatakit, the secretary of Action on Smoking and Health Foundation. However, this revenue will certainly deem disastrous as the government would be expected to spend a large amount of money on cigarette-related health problems. Doctor Prakit also mentioned that the government had lost money from treating people who were down with diseases due to smoking, such as lung cancer and heart attack. The expense amounted to about 54 billion baht in 2006. It is clear that the loss is so much more than the gain. Therefore, we should not see tobacco as simply a money-making product. It is indeed a dangerous substance that should be banned. Instead of giving more weights to the tax revenue earnings, the government should consider people’s health as the first priority.
In addition, the proponents of selling cigarettes also argue that smoking is an easy way to release stress. Most smokers believe that smoking cigarettes could release tension quickly. Nevertheless, this is not, in reality, a healthy way to release tension. It is simply the effects of Nicotine: a harmful and addictive substance in cigarettes that gives the sense of tranquility. Besides, the Action on Smoking and Health Foundation’s website states that cigarette smoke consists of over 5,000 hazardous substances which destroy nervous system, respiratory system and blood vessels. In my opinion, smoking is just an excuse to release one from stress. Nowadays, there are hundreds of ways to reduce tension without getting oneself near any health risks or diseases. Yoga, in particular, is one of the most effective techniques to combat stress. It helps develop both physical and mental health well-being.
The supporters of cigarette sale also assert that smokers do not affect non-smokers in public as there are now separate areas designated for smoking. They also point out that smoking, by itself, is not against the law. Even so, it is not so about the law but regards individual’s common sense and conscience. Despite the specific smoking areas, cigarette smoke could somehow get into the air and thus be contacted by anyone. The risks to non-smokers’ life is also at stake. I believe in human rights and everyone has the right to breathe fresh air, especially so for children. Uncaring smokers would be selfish if they do not understand or ignore the adverse effects of cigarette smoke on the innocents. Moreover, a study by the Action on Smoking and Health Foundation shows that one will be two times at risk of lung cancer if lived in the neighborhood prone of cigarette smoke, regardless whether he himself smokes or not. Tragically, there are large numbers of passive smokers or innocent victims who would be at high risk of dying from breathing in other’s cigarette smoke.
All things considered, I disagree with the idea of cigarette sale. In the real world, we face tough decisions as the government permits cigarette sale and yet implements rules to discourage smoking in public. Such contradictory policies would call for new legislations to fix the situation as soon as possible. If we leave this problem unchecked, our health and living standards would deteriorate. Inevitably, this will so affect our economy unfavorably.
